Are You Procrastinating?
Are you putting off tasks that you know are important
and you know will improve your life,
and that there will be consequences if you don’t do them?
Most people sometimes procrastinate,
myself included,
but it can become a bad habit,
so how do you overcome it?
First, understand WHY you are procrastinating.
One of the most common reasons for procrastinating is FEAR.
It can be the fear of not living up to your own expectations and therefore experiencing failure.
Reevaluate your goals.
Procrastination can come from feeling overwhelmed by the tasks ahead.
Maybe you have set too high goals for yourself?
It’s better to have a small goal that you can accomplish than to have such a big goal you can’t even get started on.
HABITS!
To get rid of a bad habit,
you have to replace the bad habit with a good habit.
You can’t just eliminate a habit without replacing it with something else.
Let’s take diet as an example.
Let’s say that you have the bad habit of eating fatty, sugary foods in the evening in front of the TV.
Instead of just saying to yourself:
“Today, I’m not going to eat ANYTHING when I’m watching TV”
This is just setting yourself up for failure because that takes a LOT of willpower to do.
Will power that most people don’t have too much left off at the end of the day.
So instead of not eating anything, just have fruits instead of fatty and sugary foods.
Then you are replacing the bad habit with a good habit,
and it’s much easier to do and doesn’t require as much willpower.
Learn to catch procrastination in its tracks.
If you can catch yourself starting to procrastinate,
you can more easily and faster put yourself back on the right track.
Take baby steps.
The first step, getting something started, is always the hardest.
Entice yourself to do the first step,
and make the first step a baby step,
because once you have started,
it’s much easier to keep going.
Split up your task into the smallest parts,
so you only have to think about one small thing at a time.
This will make you feel less overwhelmed.
REWARD YOURSELF!
Don’t forget to reward yourself for making even the smallest step in the right direction because
WHAT GETS REWARDED, GETS REPEATED!
It can be just giving yourself a pat on the back or feeling proud of yourself
or buying something for yourself.
But of course, don’t reward yourself by giving yourself something unhealthy,
that would just defeat the purpose.
MINIMIZE DISTRACTIONS!
Turn your phone off and put it away,
and block notifications on your computer.
Every time we get a notification,
dopamine is released in our brains.
Dopamine is a “feel good” hormone in our brain, that is very addicting.
This way, we are actually being rewarded by dopamine in our brains every time we get distracted by a notification.
This is of course really counterproductive to ending our procrastinating habit.
CHANGE YOUR ENVIRONMENT!
If you are having a hard time concentrating on your work,
change your environment.
This can simply be working in a different room
or going to a library or coffee shop to work.
If you can find somewhere to work where other people are also working concentrated,
this focus and concentration can motivate you to also be more focused and concentrated on your own work.
DITCH PERFECTIONISM!
PERFECTIONISM IS THE ENEMY OF EXCELLENCE!
Don’t try to do anything perfectly.
Reward yourself for just taking a baby step in the right direction.
Don’t have too high goals.
And if you fail,
don’t beat yourself up,
just try again.
The road to success is paved with failure.
So learn to embrace failure and just learn from them.
IMPROVE YOUR LIFESTYLE!
Maybe you are procrastinating because you feel tired.
Maybe you need to look at your lifestyle and fix something there too.
This can be going to bed too late because you are watching TV late at night,
or having the wrong diet.
A diet high in fat and sugar can also make you tired and lack energy, as well as a lack of exercise.
Hope this helps someone to stop procrastinating!
