If you can be a guest on a podcast with a gazillion followers that already caters to your target audience, your life will change, wouldn’t it!
What is a podcast any? According to Wikipedia, podcasts, previously known as “audioblogs”, has its roots dating back to the 1980s. With the advent of broadband Internet access and portable digital audio playback devices such as the iPod, podcasting began to catch hold in late 2004.
Newer podcasts are now multimedia – the same podcast is available on video, audio and even in written words. Podcasting is not going to replace your broadcast TV networks, your radio stations, and the local print paper In fact, these establishment media have embraced podcasting as another avenue to get their content out and get advertising revenue.
Like traditional broadcasting, podcasting creates a loyal group of followers on a specific topic. These followers are individuals who prefer to consume your content – specifically either by listening (audio format), watching (video format) or reading (written format). Podcast followers are also likely to revisit podcasts on their own.
First, you don’t need the big bucks budget like the establishment media.
Second, if you decide to setup your own podcast, you can do so with a decent budget to get a working camera and microphone. You can use free software like DaVinci resolve to edit video and Audacity to edit voice and music tracks.
Third, if you don’t want to deal with budgets and setting up your own production system, you can offer to be a guest in someone else’s podcast! Guest podcasting allows you to speak directly to podcast followers in your target audience.
Want to know the best kept secret in podcasting? It’s actually an open secret. Here it is – Podcast hosts are in constant need of guests on their shows.
Every single podcast episode requires a podcast host to spend an extraordinary amount of time in planning and execution – as well as money. Every podcast starts with zero listeners. Without none or only a few listening or watching their podcast, podcast hosts would have difficulty in convincing any notable guest to appear on their podcast. As a podcast guest, new podcasts are easy pickings but who wants zero listeners anyway? You want to start with smaller podcasts for experience and move to larger podcasts later for more exposure.
However, it’s a Catch 22. Podcasts with larger audiences have several guest applications to consider. The podcast host would obviously consider on top of their list to choose – those guests who have a large following or have a related podcast. Podcast hosts want a win-win situation.
So if you’re starting out or just have enough clients to brag about, appearing as a guest in big podcasts with a large following might be difficult.
That’s not the case for the Coaching Yellow Pages Podcast. If you are on our Listing Plan that is Paid Yearly, you automatically get an invite as a guest to our podcast. Our podcasts are conducted remotely, recorded in real time and subsequently published. Due to a huge time commitment for podcasting, we can only guarantee a one time appearance every year on our show.
1. READ and prepare for our Podcast Questionnaire (see below). It’s a list of questions we ask you during the podcast. We don’t like surprises – neither do you and our audience.
2. Watch or listen to a few episodes of our podcasts. Doing so will get you acquainted with our format.
3. Prepare 2 to 3 stories that relate to the Questionnaire so you can bond with our audience. Remember: stories sell, facts tell.
4. Have decent audio gear. A separate USB microphone or a separate microphone is recommended. The built-in microphone on a webcam or an iPhone/Android phone picks up too much background noise. A headphone or an in-ear monitor is recommended to prevent feedback and echo from computer speakers.
5. Have decent video gear that has at least a 1080p resolution. Most webcams, like the Logitech C92X webcam or better, support 1080P resolution. A 4K webcam is better. An iPhone/Android camera with setting at 1080p is OK. Make sure your video gear is properly mounted so you get a good “Rule of Thirds” shot. Your face, shoulders, arms and elbows would ideally be in the visual frame of the shot. Good video and good sound go a long way in podcasting. This is important if guest podcasting is going to be part or your content marketing strategy.
6. Have decent lighting gear and a neutral uncluttered background. Compose your shot so you can make gestures not only with your face but also your hands.
7. There will be 5 Main Questions that will be asked of you. The questions are based on Joel Bauer’s BITE – Bauer Interview Technique Engagement. There may be other follow up and related questions that will be asked spontaneously.
Question #1: I heard you have the ability to – [what RESULTS do people get when they engage with you]
Answer: Yes, reiterate the [RESULTS] and in just X simple moves/steps.
Question #2: What Qualifies You as an Expert?
Answer: Briefly talk about your background. Highlight your experience, training, teachers, mentors… What makes you qualified to teach what you’re sharing with others?
Question #3: Please teach a principle to our audience that they can relate to and apply immediately?
Answer: Teach one EVERGREEN principle that anyone can apply. Avoid talking about HACKS that work now but not tomorrow.
Question #4: Can you share one or 2 recent success stories where they applied your concepts/training/consulting/methodology/framework?
Answer: [Narrate a case study or successful testimonial that you have permission to talk about in public]
Question #5: Where Can Our Audience Get Additional Free Support?
Answer: Decide your Call To Action (CTA). Where do you want the audience to go – website URL, FB group, email you?
8. We will ask you Question 5 above so you can tell our audience how to connect with you after the show ends. The best way to handle this is to create a special landing page ONLY for listeners of our show and include a special free offer. An example of a free offer would be one of the following: ebook, checklist, infographic, tips, training, video, audio file, free consultation, etc. If you want to make an offer to a paid product, please make arrangements ahead of time with our podcast producer.
IMPORTANT: Your content will need to speak to your niche’s wants, needs, dreams, goals, desires, and particularly their pain points. In other words, you give content that is meaningful, value-packed, evergreen, precise and concise and serve them well in concrete ways. The audience will readily receive and accept your content because they are customized and relevant to them.
1. Show up early – at least 15 minutes before your scheduled episode. If you show up on time, you are already late.
2. If you don’t show up, you will forfeit your spot for the current year. See you next year.
3. Come prepared with answers to the questions on the script. All questions on the questionnaire above will be asked. However, there may be follow up or related questions asked during the natural flow of conversation.
4. Be spontaneous and natural. Smile and look at the webcam or camera most of the time – not on your keyboard or computer screen.
5. If you feel you made a mistake during the live segment, don’t worry. Everyone makes mistakes. In fact, we want you to MAKE mistakes – small mistakes make you look human and make our show spontaneous and real. If you feel you made a terrible mistake, you can ask to pause the recording for a break and we can resume with a comeback. NOTE: We don’t make do overs or edits. Our podcasts are recorded in real time and may even be broadcast live. Only PREMIUM podcasts are edited.
1. Promote the episode you are on. We will notify you as soon as the episode is available online – mainly on YouTube. Our podcast is also syndicated on CoachingYP.com and 1,200 other sites.
2. Refer your friends as guests to our podcast. HINT: if they become guests on our podcast, they can mention you and your episode on our podcast on their episode. That means multiple exposures for you and your podcast episode!
